Like Nicole Kidman, Clairo, Sophia Coppola’s daughter, and other people you saw on Instagram, my mom and I went to Charli XCX at Barclays a few weeks ago.
Aside from it being an amazing performance, what struck me was how empowering it was dancing with Charli and everyone in the audience. The whole thing—how everyone dressed and danced—was about the idea of performing sexuality for no one but yourself*—being loud and sexy because it’s fun. Not overthinking it, not trying too hard. Like being at a sleepover, or in a chaotic flow state.
This is an approach I’ve begun applying to my life more lately. Instead of trying so hard to make things happen or worrying if something is weird or cringe or off brand, I’m just doing it. Last year, I left a Dream Job that turned into a nightmare to build my business. This was in the making for years—my friends and I started a brand marketing agency in 2022—but formalized it last year. Self work in the way of getting off of birth control and doing a guided medicinal trip helped me do that. So did friends, a lot of obsessing, and more or less asking my financial advisor for written permission.
But I did it. I moved myself from the often toxic world of corporate fashion to a work flow state, and embraced the lifestyle-flexible.
And it’s been great. I feel much more aligned with the rhythms of the day and my body (and my dog’s moods, tbh) rather than just that of the corporate clock. I’m in New York City and work in marketing so there’s limits to how much of a flow I live in, but let’s just say it feels a lot more natural than it used to. I wish this for everyone.
*An argument can be made that all performances, particularly those of a sexual nature, are for others but that’s very “if a tree falls in the forest…” and I can’t really get into that rn.
Everywhere you look, we’re being told what kind of summers to have, but I’m embracing whatever kind of summer comes my way. Terrible politics and late (late, late) stage capitalism have us all burned out, so when and where we can let’s take things in stride. This is a performance, or lack thereof, I can get behind.
This is flow state summer, and I invite you to embrace it with me.
What I’m wearing and why:
Nice jewelry and easy clothes. Good sandals, nothing overly trendy. Sunglasses and hardly any makeup. Flow state dressing.
Alex Mill Jo Cotton Shirt in Poplin ($145), rag & bone Denim Shorts (an old pair, but similar can be found here, here, here, and here), MNZ Olympia Wedges ($446), Jenny Bird Dhani Anklet ($120),
Three beauty products I’m eyeing right now:
One thing to not be too flow-y about is (surprise!) sunscreen. Like a walking listcicle, I’ve worn EltaMD every day for several years and love it. Here’s a few others I enjoy:
EltaMD UV Broad-Spectrum Facial Sunscreen SPF40 ($40), La Roche Posay Mineral Sunscreen SPF50 ($31.99),Saie Sunvisor SPF35 ($38)
One organization to focus on this week:
Palestine Children’s Relief Fund: The lack of response to the crisis in Palestine has forever changed the way I look at the world. Please help if you can.
(Plus, one more famous plug for Zohran Mamdani.)
Thanks for being here,
Robin
Love the idea of embracing whatever summer comes your way. Let’s do that together in Provence 😉
Being your true self is the most empowering thing there is. Just doing it with you!
